Michael Hartley
Scoutmaster
12 years with Troop 1887
Michael has been Scoutmaster of Troop 1887 since 2014. An Eagle Scout himself, he brings a passion for the outdoors and a commitment to the patrol method. Under his leadership, the troop has produced over 20 Eagle Scouts and completed numerous high-adventure expeditions including Philmont Scout Ranch and the Florida Sea Base.
David Nguyen
Assistant Scoutmaster
7 years with Troop 1887
David joined the troop leadership team in 2019 after his son crossed over from Cub Scouts. An Eagle Scout and former Order of the Arrow member, David leads the troop's camping and outdoor skills program. He specializes in wilderness first aid and navigation.
Sarah Okonkwo
Assistant Scoutmaster
4 years with Troop 1887
Sarah joined the troop in 2022 and quickly became an invaluable part of the leadership team. She coordinates merit badge counselors, manages the troop's service project pipeline, and serves as the primary point of contact for new families exploring Troop 1887.
Robert Castillo
Troop Committee Chair
9 years with Troop 1887
Robert chairs the Troop Committee, overseeing the administrative and financial health of the troop. He coordinates with American Legion Post 177, manages the troop's annual budget, and ensures all BSA policies and Youth Protection guidelines are followed. Robert has two sons who are Eagle Scouts.
Scout-Led Structure
Leadership Starts with the Scouts
Troop 1887 follows the BSA patrol method — the troop is led by scouts, guided by adults. Our scouts hold real leadership positions with real responsibilities. These roles build the communication, planning, and decision-making skills that serve them for life.
Senior Patrol Leader (SPL)
The highest scout leadership position in the troop. The SPL runs troop meetings, leads the Patrol Leaders' Council, and is the primary scout voice in troop planning. Elected by the troop.
Assistant Senior Patrol Leader (ASPL)
Supports the SPL and steps in when the SPL is unavailable. The ASPL often leads training for new scouts and coordinates inter-patrol activities.
Patrol Leader (PL)
Each patrol is led by a Patrol Leader elected by patrol members. The PL runs patrol meetings, represents the patrol at the Patrol Leaders' Council, and is responsible for patrol morale and performance.
Assistant Patrol Leader (APL)
Supports the Patrol Leader and takes charge when the PL is absent. The APL is a key mentor for newer scouts within the patrol.
Troop Guide
An experienced scout assigned to mentor new scouts as they join the troop. The Troop Guide helps new scouts learn the ropes, earn early ranks, and feel at home in the troop.
Scribe
Keeps records of troop meetings, attendance, and advancement. The Scribe works closely with adult leaders to maintain accurate troop records.
Quartermaster
Manages the troop's equipment inventory — tents, cooking gear, first aid kits, and more. The Quartermaster ensures gear is clean, accounted for, and ready for every outing.
Order of the Arrow Representative
Serves as the liaison between the troop and the Order of the Arrow lodge. Promotes OA activities and encourages eligible scouts to pursue membership in Scouting's honor camping society.
